Did you know?  Mental Health America of Eastern Missouri has a very small staff that supports over 350 volunteers in the St. Louis area.  Most of the programs designed to provide help to people with mental illness are provided by volunteers with minimal staff supervision.

We need your help!  Volunteer opportunities are available in the areas of:

  • Clerical/Office help
  • Legislation/Research
  • Facility Upkeep
  • Fundraising
  • Programs
  • Speakers Bureau

There are some specific programs that can use your help now.

BRIDGES (Building Recovery of Individual Dreams & Goals through Education and Support) is a statewide program taught by consumers for adult consumers. Individuals learn that learning from each other empowers to build bridges to recovery. A 10-week educational course focuses on facts and learning about feelings. Support groups are facilitated by trained class members from the educational course. People can join the self-help groups even if they have not taken the 10-week course.

Mental health consumers are needed to teach BRIDGES classes and develop new groups.

Public Policy:

Information Manager—Create system to organize files, journals, technical assistance manuals, policy reports, etc. Create system to organize phone numbers, fax numbers, email addresses, list of organizations and members, etc.

Public Policy Researcher—Research sources on the Internet to gather data, information on programs in other states, etc. as it pertains to public policy initiatives; read journals, articles, reports, etc. and extract relevant information.

Office Support:

Mailing help -- Stuff envelopes, etc.

Data Update-- Help update databases (involves calling to update information and/or input of data into computer databases)

Copying & Filing--File and sort information and documents. Assist with copying needs

Program Evaluation:

Occasionally we need volunteers to conduct brief survey calling or compile data from knowledge-based tests and satisfaction surveys.

Holiday Party Preparation:

We need volunteers to donate baked goods or other food items for our holiday party in December. A batch of spaghetti or a plate of home baked cookies would be most welcome. For most of our clients, our December party is their holiday celebration. We also accept donations to give as gifts, such as new store-bought items or used items in good condition. Any hygiene items such as shampoo, toothpaste, etc. make nice care packages for clients. Volunteers are also encouraged to attend the holiday event to help distribute food and gifts, play games, etc. We are also looking for holiday entertainment. Perhaps your church choir would enjoy performing for our clients? Community singing groups, dance clubs, etc., are also encouraged.

Fundraising:

We need volunteers to help call local businesses and establishments to ask for donations for our charity auctions.

Beautification and Upkeep of MHAEM:

· Painting

· Cleaning

· Washing windows

· Yard work

· Gardening (upkeep of flowers!)

· Or anything you could do to help!

Mental Health Professionals Needed:

Mental Health Professionals are needed for our Speakers Bureau and to conduct educational workshops.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities - please call the volunteer coordinator at (314) 773-1399 or e-mail us at info@mhaem.org

Thank You!
